Fruits of the Sea – A Hands-On
Cooking Experience

As part of Seaweed. A Celebration, Fruits of the Sea is a rare opportunity to cook with, taste, and learn about seaweed under the guidance of Zoë Brittain (Deakin University). This hands-on workshop invites participants into the kitchen to prepare dishes using local marine algae, explore its flavours and textures, and share a meal together. Along the way, Zoë will introduce the culinary possibilities of seaweed — from umami depth to subtle salinity and omelettes to ice cream — while unpacking its vital role in healthy marine ecosystems and resilient coastal food systems. Part cooking class, part shared table, and part ocean story, Fruits of the Sea offers a unique chance to experience seaweed not just as an ingredient, but as a living connection between reef, plate, and place. Seaweed for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Omelette, sushi, pasta and ice cream with red algae. Participate in preparation and enjoy the fruits of your labour from the sea!!! Places are limited.

Dive Into the Unseen World of Microalgae: Workshop With Faith Coleman

Meet Karenia. The South Australian Karenia bloom brought the health of our marine environments and the microscopic organisms within our oceans. Microalgae blooms occur naturally along our coastline, largely due to the upwelling systems. Most of these blooms are not harmful and in fact are the main source of primary production (i.e. food) for crustaceans and fish, including the tiny copepods that our visiting whales feed on. Faith will be joining us for the weekend, to be involved in a range of activities. The first will be a practical drop-in session, where participants can bring their own water samples to see what they contain, or look at those Faith will have with her, under a range of different microscopes and treatments. Seaweed. A Celebration

Presented by Holdfast Limestone Coast Inc Holdfast Limestone Coast Inc is proud to present 'Seaweed. A Celebration'. An exhibition exploring the theme of marine flora and fauna of the Limestone Coast region. This event highlights the distinctive Limestone Coast region, famous for its dramatic limestone cliffs, vibrant turquoise and green seas, sea stacks, offshore reefs, and cool temperate climate and along with the nutrient-rich current of the Bonney Upwelling creating a unique environment where marine algae flourish. Holdfast Limestone Coast Inc is a diverse, science-based organisation led by volunteers. While a scientific approach is central to its mission, the organisation embraces art and culture as vehicles to enhance public awareness about the significance of marine algae. Now in its fourth year, the Holdfast exhibition has previously attracted numerous artists from across the region. The 2026 exhibition will take place at the Mount Gambier Airport Hangar Gallery, serving as the gateway to the Limestone Coast. This year, for the first time, there will be a Viewers' Choice Award valued at $250. Our guest from Deakin Seaweed, Dr. Alecia Bellgrove will launch HOLDFAST LIMESTONE COAST ID CARDS. The Hangar Gallery will be opened by the Mayor of Grant District Council, Kylie Boston. Seaweed. A Celebration has been funded by the District Council of Grant

15 March 2026, 3:30pm to 6:30pm
As part of Seaweed. A Celebration, Holdfast Limestone Coast Inc invites community members to take part in an immersive seaweed-inspired painting workshop that brings together arts, science and culture. Led by artist Elle (Earth Glow Florence), the workshop begins with a guided beach experience at Squeaky's, where participants will be introduced to local seaweed species alongside marine expert Sally O’Connor and artist Jo Fife. Through real-life observation and imagery, participants will explore the exquisite reds, greens and brown algae of our coastline, gaining insight into their ecological importance and cultural value. The group will then gather at Salt Café & Bar for a facilitated painting session, using colour, form and texture to translate scientific understanding and lived coastal experience into creative expression. Midway through the workshop, participants will pause for shared food, drinks and informal conversation, creating space for connection, reflection and community exchange. Each participant will create an individual artwork. All works created during the workshop will have the opportunity to be exhibited at Salt Café & Bar as part of Seaweed. A Celebration. Visitors will be invited to vote for a Community Favourite, with the winning artist receiving a Salt Café dinner voucher. The workshop concludes with relaxed conversation, and participants are warmly encouraged to stay on for dinner at Salt Café & Bar, extending the evening through food, reflection and connection. 21 January 2026, 9:00am to 11:00am
A very happy group came together at Beachport on 21 January for the first Walking the Seasons event, exploring seaweed and connections during the Boandik Shell and Wattle Seed season. Some were local and some travelled from Mount Gambier, Kingston, and from as far as Kangaroo Island and Hamilton. Participants were blessed with an ideal morning – overcast, with a variety of cloud shapes and patterns blanketing the sky. The lack of sun did not distract from the shimmering sapphire of the sea. A mild breeze pushed in from the south, lifting the crests of the waves at regular, predictable intervals. The sand was dry beyond the high-tide mark. On the far side of the rock-wall, kelp mounded high dotted the shore and a lone seagull picked something delicious from the sand. The earth was littered with an indescribable array of algae varying in colour and texture continually washing ashore with the gentle lapping of the ocean. A close up look showed many species common to both Beachport and Port MacDonnell. However there were some notable differences. Seagrass, Amphibolis, was abundant in the wrack and more robust than examples found at Port MacDonnell, and samples of Bull Kelp, Durvillea, were smaller, and less robust than those found at Port MacDonnell. While participants spotted seaweed and fossicked in the wrack at low tide, they learnt fascinating facts about seaweed from experts, including, Faith Coleman. They also heard from Friends of Seaweed Limestone Coast’s Sally O’Connor and Jo Fife, whose aim is to highlight the importance of seaweed through science and art, and Uncle Doug who explained the six Boandik seasons. Thank you to Uncle Doug, Burrandies Aboriginal Corporation and the Limestone Coast Landscape Board. The Walking the Seasons project has been funded by Parks and Nature. This walk was the first of six walks to be held on the Beachport coast throughout 2026, coordinated by Friends of Seaweed, as part of the Holdfast Limestone Coast Project. The series of walks aims to improve awareness of “smelly old seaweed”, such as the local species at Beachport and their diversity, their importance to the Limestone Coast, and how seasonal change affects them. Through these walks we hope to recognise how changing conditions and seasonal patterns throughout the year influence the coastal environment, particularly seaweed. There is a great need to broaden awareness and knowledge of how seasonal change influences ocean algae and helps shape and sustain life on our shoreline. Understanding these changes and also exploring what they mean for ocean algae and dependent species, such as resident and migratory shore birds, is important to us all. For example, during the walk, we saw Gulls, Oyster Catchers and a White-faced Herron, just to name a few. Walking the Seasons with local ecologists, fauna and flora experts and members of the community will help us all document seasonal coastal change in the Limestone Coast.
